Who Rules the Nations?

It’s an exciting time in the United States of America. A new President-elect has been announced – President Elect Joe Biden! Every election year I am moved by the joy felt by one half of the country and saddened by the despair of the other half. One thing is for sure in America, elections won’t always go the way we would hope, whether we’re on the left or on the right. Regardless of whether your candidate won or lost though, there is great news! Jesus still sits on His throne!

I recently had the pleasure to go to a prayer service where God (through one of my favorite pastors) gave me the greatest peace with regards to election season – Psalm 47:7-8 "For God is the King of all the earth; Sing praises with understanding. God reigns over the nations; God sits on His holy throne." It was the perfect reminder that no matter which way the presidential election goes, whether 2020, 2024, and beyond, God is still the one the throne of all nations!

I’ll spare you my opinion on our 2020 candidates because I’m sure to be mostly wrong about both men. With the limited exposure we get to political candidates, it’s difficult to know what any of them truly stand for. However, there is one leader I know of, whom I never worry about flip-floppy behavior or inflammatory speech. He’s the true King of all nations. Can you guess who? Jesus! If there’s anyone we can unequivocally put our faith and trust in to, it is our Lord, Savior, and Creator. He is infallible and unchanging and loves us more than any man or woman on a perishable paper ballot. And we know of Him and about Him through His imperishable Word!

Whether the results of this year’s election bring you joy or anxiety, remember that no man or woman in this world will be someone you can fully trust or build your life on. Presidents are merely people; made from the same flesh and blood that we all are. They can be used by God, but they aren’t the source of perfection, hope, and peace. That role can only be fulfilled by the Lord himself. So beloved, I pray you be reminded of Matthew 7:24-25:

“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who build his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.”
